Sandy Bay has no road access, so reaching it is part of the adventure. Two main trails lead to the beach.
From Llandudno
The most popular route. Park along the road in Llandudno, then follow the coastal path south past the boulders. The trail is well-worn but rocky in places, so wear sturdy shoes, not flip-flops.
- Free street parking, but car break-ins have been reported in the area, so hide all valuables or take an Uber
- Tip car guards R10–20, but don't rely on them for security
- Rocky terrain, closed shoes recommended
- Some scrambling over boulders near the end
From Hout Bay / Sandy Bay Road
A longer but scenic alternative. Follow Sandy Bay Road off the M6, park at the end, and take the trail down through the fynbos. Beautiful views of the Atlantic on the descent.
- Small parking area at the trailhead, same break-in risk, so leave nothing visible
- Best visited on weekends before 10am, ideally with company
- Steeper descent with loose sand sections
- More shade and indigenous vegetation
Know Before You Go
Sandy Bay is wild, beautiful, and completely unserviced. Come prepared.
Go in Groups: No Exceptions
The trail is isolated, and hikers have reported muggings in the past. As with any secluded trail, it's safer to go in a group rather than alone, and to avoid quiet times like midweek mornings or late afternoons. Always tell someone your plans before you set off.
Leave Valuables Behind
Theft has been reported on the trails and at parking areas. Leave electronics, jewellery, and anything valuable at home. In your car, hide everything, since even empty bags can attract break-ins. Taking an Uber from Camps Bay or Hout Bay is a lower-risk alternative to driving, so check current fares before you go.
Clothing-Optional Etiquette
Sandy Bay is a well-known naturist beach. Respect everyone's choice. No photography of people without consent. Staring is unwelcome.
Watch for Wildlife
Cape Cobras live in the fynbos, so stay on the path and don't reach into rock crevices. Baboons are common and can be aggressive, especially around food. Never feed them, keep bags closed, and give them space.
No Facilities, No Signal
There are no toilets, taps, bins, or shade structures, and mobile phone reception is unreliable at best. Download offline maps before you go. Bring enough water, food, and sunscreen, and carry out all your rubbish.
Sun Protection
Cape Town UV is extreme, especially October–March. SPF50+, a hat, and plenty of water are non-negotiable. There's almost no natural shade.
